SULTANATES OF INDIA

GHAZNAVIDS

In 992 AD, Sabuktgin of Ghazna took possession of the country as far as the Indus.  Jaipal, who was the ruler of Sindh area did not like Islam dominance in the neighbourhood and felt encouraged to attack Sabuktgin  and failed to defeat him. Jaipal ended up signing to buy peace for ten lakhs of dirhams but did not fulfil the term.  This brought Sabuktgin a footing in India, where he defeated Jaipal again but returned with a huge war booty without annexing the land he conquered.

In fact Sabuktgin's victory exposed a weakness of Indian rulers and it is Sabuktgin's successor, Mahmud of Ghazna wrestled the Kingdom of Lahore from Jaipal-II.  Mahmud defeated Rajas of Bhalia Multan and the united armies of the Kings of Gwalior, Malwa, Kalinjar, Kanauj, Delhi and also Ajmer in a decision battle at Peshawar in 1008 AD.   From 1000 AD to 1027 AD, he carried seventeen invasions and looted every temple and carried a huge booty, and did not even hesitate to massacre innocent people.  Repeated invasions and plundering scores of  Indian Hindu Shrines named him in the history as a Idol Breaker.  The gates of the north-west remained open henceforth to Muslim invaders.
