SULTANATES OF INDIA
DELHI SULTANATES
Fourth Dynasty - The Sayyids
The process of disintegration of Delhi Sultanates began during the reign of Muhammad Tughlaq and Firoz Tughluq and their incompetent successor could not check it further. In 1308, the invasion by Timur made it worse and there came new dynasty of the Sayyids.Khizr Khan (1414-1421)
Khizr Khan founded the Sayyid Dynasty with his able ruling. He was soft natured and hesitated from shedding the blood without great necessity. The very nature of him brought into existence many petty kingdoms. Hindus of Daob, Kalithar and Chandwar stopped paying the tributes and hence were defeated by Khizr Khan during his reign. Throughout his rule, he was busy suppressing revolts in various part. He could not carry any major reforms, but his subjects loved him with great affection. On his death, he was succeeded by his son Mubarak Shah.
Mubarak Shah (1421-1434)
Mubarak was a wise man, resourceful like his father and was a able ruler too. Like his father, he spent his life time in fighting revolts. He was a firm muslim, and was kind towards his subjects. He founded the new city of Mubarakabad in 1433 on the river of Yamuna.
Muhammad Shah (1433-1444)
Mubarak did not have son to succeed him. The nobles put Muhammad Shah on the throne, who was the son of his brother. He abused the power and lost the affection of his royal force who had freed him from enemies. Throughout his reign, he remained in the capital and submerged deeply in indolence and pleasure. He took Bahlol Lodi's help to defeat Mohammad Shah of Khalij who had marched towards Delhi.
Alam Shah (1444-1451)
In 1444, Muhammad Shah died and his son Alaudin took the throne under the title "Alam Shah". In 1447, he went to Baduan and liked the place so much that he retired to Baduan permanently. He allowed Bahlol to rule Delhi in 1451. Till his death (!478), he continued ruling Baduan. Thus the Sayyid dynasty ended after his successful rule of Baduan for 37 years.
